Celebrating over 50 years in show business with his own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Tony Orlando will perform at Casino New Brunswick’s Event Centre on May 9 at 8 p.m.
Orlando has sold millions of records, including five number one hits: “Tie A Yellow Ribbon ‘Round The Ole Oak Tree,” “Knock Three Times,” “Candida,” “My Sweet Gypsy Rose” and “He Don’t Love You (Like I Love You).”
After becoming a teenage idol at sixteen with his first hit, “Halfway to Paradise, Orlando became a music publisher for Clive Davis at April-Blackwood Music, where he signed such songwriters as James Taylor.
Orlando co-starred on the very popular show, Tony Orlando and Dawn that ran on CBS from 1974-1976. Breaking new ground, it was the first multi-ethnic variety show on television. The show welcomed the biggest names in show business each week as Orlando’s guests, including his boyhood idols, Jackie Gleason and Jerry Lewis.
The friendship forged by Orlando and Lewis was a strong one. Tony made his first appearance on Jerry’s Labor Day Telethon in 1976 and served twelve years as the New York host since then. He has served as an MDA vice president from 1987 to 1990 and again in 2002 to the present. Orlando and Lewis also teamed for an unforgettable series of shows in the early 1980s, taking the stage at the Las Vegas Hilton and the Riviera hotels. Only two other entertainers, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr., share the distinction of performing with Lewis.
Orlando is a popular headliner in Las Vegas, Atlantic City, Reno, Biloxi and Laughlin and he maintains a touring schedule with appearances at performing arts centers around throughout the United States and Canada. He remains one of America’s best-loved personalities. He has been a recipient of three American Music Awards and a People’s Choice Award. He starred in Barnum and Smokey Joe’s Café on Broadway was the first celebrity spokesman for Nutrisystem. He has also hosted Time Life music infomercials that have generated record sales.
