Casino New Brunswick presents Nana Mouskouri in her Happy Birthday Tour!
Celebrating 50 years as a performer, world-renowned singer, Nana Mouskouri will perform at Casino New Brunswick’s Event Centre in Moncton, as part of her “Happy Birthday Tour”, on Thursday, April 10, 2014.
Mouskouri will kick off her world tour in her homeland of Athens, Greece on her birthday, October 13, 2013. The tour, which sees her perform in Canada for the first time since 2007, has the highly acclaimed singer performing jazz, pop, classical, folk and world music in many languages and promoting her latest album, Rendez Vous (2011).
Mouskouri’s interests span a broad spectrum, including her involvement in UNICEF and becoming a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, her election as a Member of European Parliament and especially, her deep interest in the French language. She has left a significant footprint on the Quebec culture because of her attachment to the French Language.
Mouskouri released her first record in 1958 and in 1962, became well known with the song "The White Rose of Athens" beginning her career as an international singer.
Her first show in Canada was in Quebec in 1965 and up until 2006, she returned to the area to perform fairly regularly. Her affection for the citizens of Quebec led her to perform classic Quebec pieces, such as Je reviens chez nous by Jean-Pierre Ferland, on some of the biggest stages around the world.
Mouskouri, who now lives in Switzerland, is scheduled to receive the National Honour of Quebec today from the Premier of the province, Pauline Marois, for humanitarian work as well as her career.
In 1993, Mouskouri was named UNICEF "International Goodwill Ambassador". One of Mouskouri’s missions was to bring attention to, and protect, children affected by war and violence around the world. At her concerts and media interviews, she often urges the public to support UNICEF.
Elected to the Greek New Democracy party, she sat in the European Parliament from 1994 to 1999, accepting the position as a true honor. A philanthropist and a patron, in 1994 she created the foundation “Focus on Hope”, through which she has truly shown her generosity.
